Integrative health is having a moment in human medicine, and that same blending of Eastern and Western modalities is now showing up in pet care, with veterinary platforms starting to acquire integrative health capabilities directly.
One clear example is VetnCare's acquisition of Holistic Veterinary Care. VetnCare is a Northern California community of veterinary hospitals offering wellness, surgery, imaging, and specialties like oncology and dermatology. Holistic Veterinary Care, founded in Oakland in 2009 by Dr. Gary Richter, integrates acupuncture and chiropractic care with conventional medicine. It's VetnCare's sixth acquisition under Great Point Partners, and the first under new CEO Matt Kirchner.
Viewed through our M&A Matrix™, the deal falls into Cell 3, where a platform acquires complementary capabilities to serve the same end customer more deeply. Rather than adding another general-practice location, VetnCare is adding a modality its network didn't previously offer.
“Having built HVC from the ground up to be a facility that offers services that are unavailable anywhere else, it was vitally important to me for the new practice owner to honor that legacy. VetnCare was the only buyer I connected with that was interested in HVC for what HVC is and wants to continue in that tradition.” — Dr. Gary Richter, founder of Holistic Veterinary Care
For founders, the takeaway is that a differentiated clinical niche can be as valuable to a platform as adding square footage. Just as integrative and functional medicine have moved from the margins into mainstream human healthcare, we expect the same normalization to continue in veterinary care.
